ORLANDO PIRATES ELEVATE THEIR GAME FOR THE BIG STAGE
By: Adam Pelletier
Orlando and Jacksonville is a rivalry between two cities that have defined the indoor game. This rivalry has never disappointed, and Sunday night's showdown between the Pirates and the Sharks did not disappoint. The Orlando Pirates stepped up under the bright lights of a national broadcast and took down the rival Jacksonville Sharks 54-42 with one of their most complete performances of the season.
The Sharks entered the game as a title contender and with one of the most complete offenses and defenses in the league. Jacksonville is on a mission to secure a spot at the top of the standings and is battling to catch the Blizzard for the number one seed. On the other side of the field, the Orlando Pirates have been up and down, working to separate themselves from a crowded middle tier of playoff contenders in the Eastern Conference.
By the end of the game, Jacksonville left the field with more questions than answers, and Orlando left the field looking like a team that no one should want to play come playoff time.
The Orlando Pirates opened the game on a 14-0 first quarter, and didn't look back. After being on the wrong end of a blowout earlier at the hands of the Sharks, the Pirates and their fans relished the revenge spot. Even as the Sharks furiously battled back with 35 second-half points, the Pirates held on. Orlando played a complete and balanced game, scoring two touchdowns in all four quarters to hold off the Sharks.
Halfway through the game, it had become clear that Orlando showed up ready, willing, and able to defend their home turf. Rookie quarterback Paxton DeLaurent looked comfortable, confident, and every bit like an elite indoor quarterback. From the opening kick through the end of the game, DeLaurent was in control of the Pirates' offense and systematically picked apart a Sharks' defense that entered this game as the best in the league in points against per game.
Jacksonville was hamstrung by their slow start, but their second half showed fans what this offense is capable of, giving a peek at what could come next for the Sharks down the stretch.
A TALE OF TWO TEAMS
DeLaurent was surgical all night and finished the game 16/23 for 127 yards and two touchdowns through the air. He added 11 rushes for 67 yards and two touchdowns. Orlando Head Coach Rod Windsor talked about DeLaurent and his growth post-game and said, "It has been awesome to watch him develop, he's listening and doing everything he needs to do and is playing like a pro."
One key for DeLaurent in the last two weeks has been his willingness to run and his ability to gain key chunks of yardage to convert first downs and touchdowns for the Pirates. His five rushing touchdowns over the past two weeks match his total through the first ten games. "I told coach that I'm not gonna run until the playoffs," said DeLaurent. "We're in the playoffs now. We gotta have it now."
Windsor echoed that sentiment in his postgame remarks and mentioned that the sense of urgency was lacking earlier this season, but that the Pirates had begun to gel more, and they played with that sense of urgency on Sunday night.
On a night between rivals, the game was defined by the quarterback play. Sammy Edwards made his debut for Jacksonville and survived a rough first half, where he only completed 40% of his passes. Throughout the first half, Edwards was out of sync, and the talented Pirates' front did not help his efforts to settle down.
He rebounded in the second half and looked like the player many in Jacksonville think he will be, going 11/12 for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Edwards also added a key rushing touchdown and two-point conversion as the Sharks' offense found a way to attack Orlando every drive.
Despite that strong second-half push by the Sharks, the Pirates held on and improved to 7-5 and are taking steps to lock up a playoff spot in the tough Eastern Conference. On the other side of the Kia Center, the Sharks slip to 9-3, but are still holding to the second seed in the East.
GROWING THE RIVALRY
With two of the best and most storied markets in indoor football colliding on Sunday night, the rivalry and passion came through on the field and in the stands. From the Pirates' band to the Sharks' faithful who made the trek down I-4 to Orlando, the energy radiated from the stands to both teams on the field. It was chippy and hard-fought all night, with plenty of talking and extra being given on each play. Both teams made it clear they were not going to go quietly into the night at the Kia Center.
Every participant, on both sidelines, wanted this game just that little bit extra. Pirates' offensive line coach Les Moss made it clear pregame how much this game meant to him. "I never thought I'd be back coaching in Orlando," Moss said. "It's exciting to be back, and there's a little added juice today since it's Jacksonville."
Moss served as head coach of the Sharks from 2010-2016, but prior to that, he was the defensive coordinator in Orlando from 1991-2003, where he worked under his father, Perry Moss. Adding even more to this game, Coach Moss gets to coach on Father's Day with his son, Orlando wide receivers coach Jake Moss.
Fans in the stands, staff from both teams, and the players on the field know what this rivalry means to both franchises, and the playoff implications of the matchup certainly escalated the intensity on the field.
ORLANDO PLAYS A COMPLETE GAME
DeLaurent was masterful for the Pirates, and his supporting cast was just as good as he was. Throughout the night, the player who was in on every play in multiple phases of the game was superstar running back, Pooka Williams. Williams has been the engine that makes the Pirates' offense go all season, and tonight was no exception.
Whether it was taking the handoff from DeLaurent, running crisp routes, or breaking open the game with his explosive kick returns, Pooka was all over the turf. His 180 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns were a difference maker on Sunday night. And it wasn't just his touches offensively, but the threat of him touching the ball on kick returns that had Jacksonville making massive adjustments to their game plan.
All night, the Sharks blasted line drive kicks into the turf at the Kia Center and angled every kick into the nooks and crannies of the boards to keep the ball out of Williams' hands. It was in vain more often than not as Williams routinely fielded kicks and averaged nearly 20 yards per return, setting up the Orlando offense with prime field position on most drives.
If Pooka Williams brought the lightning on Sunday, Devonte O'Malley brought the thunder for Orlando defensively. His 2.5 sacks were key to the Pirates disrupting the Sharks' offense, and his relentless pressure all night had Edwards running for his life and scrambling to try to salvage broken plays. The defensive front had one of its best games for the Pirates, and Orlando's defense showed up with a tenacity that they were lacking during their April meeting with the Sharks.
As Coach Windsor said, the team has realized the need to play with urgency as the number of games remaining shrinks, and the losses become more crushing to the team's playoff goals with each passing week.
JACKSONVILLE RALLIES
Although it may seem like the Sharks are left scrambling after this loss, the second half of the game should be a bright spot for Coach Gibson and Sharks' fans. Sammy Edwards started rocky, but turned it around before the end of the game, and the Sharks used that second-half turnaround to come storming back into the game.
The catalyst for the offensive turnaround was wide receiver Marcus Rogers. Rogers opened the season in the CFL and was battling an injury recently that delayed his 2026 debut. His return on Sunday did not disappoint and was as good as advertised.
Throughout the night, Edwards looked for Rogers when the Sharks had to have a big play, and Rogers would regularly deliver that play. Using his size and speed, he beat the Pirates' defense at every level and led all receivers in the game with six catches for 71 yards and two touchdowns.
Even as Edwards and Rogers started to establish some chemistry, running back Jimmi Robinson was largely contained by a tenacious Pirates' defense. Robinson entered the game as one of the most dynamic players in the indoor game, and the Pirates keyed on him early and often, holding him to 58 yards on 16 touches. Robinson did find the end zone on a second-half rush, but the bulk of his yardage came on just two plays.
As the Sharks move forward with Edwards under center, it will be critical for him to find a way to rally all the playmakers on the Sharks' offense and keep that balanced attack on an even keel. If he plays like he did in the second half of the game, that should not be a worry for the Sharks or their fans.
MAPPING A PATH FORWARD
With one of the best rivalries in the IFL playing its first iteration in the storied Kia Center, both teams came to play and delivered a strong performance for the fans in the building and watching on Yahoo! Sports. It was the kind of game where anything could happen, and that had fans leaving the arena clamoring for the next game and exclaiming, "I'm a fan, and I will be back."
This kind of statement game, packed with big hits, big plays, and even bigger energy, defines the Indoor War and has attracted fans for generations.
Jacksonville took the best shot their in-state rivals could give and learned something about their squad. Heading into another tough battle on Sunday, June 28, the Sharks will look to rally at home as they host the San Diego Strike Force at 7:30 pm on Yahoo! Sports. Sammy Edwards and the rest of the Sharks' offense will have to avoid a slow start against a potent Strike Force offense in a game that should deliver similar intensity between two longstanding IFL teams battling for playoff position.
Orlando heads on the road next week as they travel to Quad City to take on a Steamwheelers team that's sitting on the outside of the playoff picture and looking to gain position in the standings and on a rival for one of the four Eastern Conference playoff spots. That showdown will also be on Yahoo! Sports, with a 4:00 pm kickoff time. The Pirates will look to build on this performance and will need to repeat this tenacity against a Quad City team that is on a two-game winning streak. Paxton DeLaurent and company will be ready, bringing their playoff mindset to the field again.
2026 has been a spectacular season for the Indoor Football League and its teams. Fans nationwide have had a chance to see some of the best indoor football every weekend thanks to Yahoo! Sports and Overnght. With teams tightly packed in the East and West, the final playoff push will be intense, and you will not want to miss one minute of the Indoor War.
