Week 4 of the Indoor Football League delivered a mix of late-game drama and defining performances, as thrilling finishes in Tucson and Orlando highlighted a weekend where contenders separated themselves and statement wins reshaped the early-season landscape.
The Indoor Football League wrapped up its Week 4 schedule as the league's intense physicality took center stage. Fans saw hungry underdogs and established favorites alike fight for dominance in their respective conferences, with this early stretch of the season highlighting the high-scoring volatility.
From dominant first-quarter surges to narrow escapes and individual masterclasses, the weekend's action offered a clear look at which squads have the depth to compete and which are struggling to find answers.
Tucson Sugar Skulls at New Mexico Chupacabras
Final: Tucson 45, New Mexico 40
The Tucson Sugar Skulls earned their first win of the season, surviving a frantic late rally by the New Mexico Chupacabras. Tucson appeared to have the game in hand early, using a balanced attack led by quarterback Draylen Ellis to build a commanding 28–6 lead.
Ellis showcased his arm strength with a long touchdown pass to Brian Smith, helping restore a three-score cushion just as New Mexico began to find momentum.
The Chupacabras refused to fold at home, clawing back within four points in the final minutes behind a gritty performance from quarterback Ja'rome Johnson. Johnson ignited the comeback with a touchdown pass to CJ Jefferson and a bouncing scoring run by La'james White.
However, the game was finally decided with 6:28 remaining when Tucson's Bri'On Murray intercepted a Johnson pass near midfield and returned it to the New Mexico 15-yard line. The turnover allowed the Sugar Skulls to rely on their ground game, burn the clock, and escape Albuquerque with a win.
Green Bay Blizzard at Iowa Barnstormers
Final: Green Bay 50, Iowa 39
The Green Bay Blizzard moved to 3-0 after a performance defined by surgical efficiency. Quarterback Liam Thompson was the key, throwing for 140 yards and three touchdowns while adding a rushing score.
Thompson's ability to distribute the ball was clear as he connected with Draysean Hudson for a 40-yard touchdown and Kairee Robinson for another. The Blizzard's discipline played a big role, as they played turnover-free football and converted 67% of their third downs.
Iowa's Harry Roubidoux posted impressive numbers in the loss, throwing for 194 yards and six touchdowns. His main targets, Kurtis Ravenel and Donald McKinney, were nearly unstoppable in the red zone, combining for five scores.
Despite the fireworks in the air, Iowa's inability to execute on key plays proved costly; the Barnstormers failed to convert four two-point attempts.
While the Blizzard offense stayed on schedule, Iowa's defense struggled to get off the field, allowing Green Bay to dominate the time of possession by nearly seven minutes.
Quad City Steamwheelers at Orlando Pirates
Final: Orlando 49, Quad City 46
In a back-and-forth battle at Kia Center, the Orlando Pirates overcame a 14–0 first quarter deficit to edge out the Quad City Steamwheelers in their inaugural home opener.
Pirates quarterback Paxton DeLaurent shook off a rocky start with three interceptions to finish with 236 yards and four touchdowns. DeLaurent's resilience was matched by his weapons, Teo Redding and Pooka Williams, who combined for 157 receiving yards to fuel a large 28-point second quarter surge.
Quad City quarterback Daquan Neal delivered a dual-threat show, accounting for five total touchdowns and leading the team with 59 rushing yards. The Steamwheelers' defense kept them in the game with big plays, including a 28-yard pick-six by KeShaun Moore and two interceptions from Jamon Williams.
Ultimately, the difference came down to special teams; Orlando's Axel Perez was perfect on all seven extra point attempts, while Quad City missed two field goal attempts and two extra points making it a narrow 3-point victory.
Arizona Rattlers at Fishers Freight
Final: Fishers 63, Arizona 42
The Fishers Freight dominated the Arizona Rattlers behind a relentless running game and a 42–21 first-half explosion. Freight quarterback Felix Harper only needed eight pass attempts to make an impact, with half of his completions going for touchdowns. The Freight's ground game was outstanding, outgaining Arizona 167–45.
Dominic Roberto was a force, scoring three rushing touchdowns, while Josiah King added two and a 50-yard kickoff return that broke the game open.
Arizona's Max Meylor kept the Rattlers competitive, throwing for 198 yards and four touchdowns, including two to Kymani Clarke. However, the Rattlers' offense became one-dimensional early on as they fell behind.
Despite Meylor's efforts and a significant advantage in possession time, Arizona's defense couldn't stop Fishers on third or fourth down. The Freight's efficiency and explosive special teams ensured Arizona couldn't close the gap in the second half.
With several teams still aiming to establish themselves in the standings, the league now shows a split between top contenders and those still searching for their first win.
The opening weeks of the season are already giving shape to the league, showing which teams can control the pace and which are still trying to settle in. Fishers and Green Bay continue to look sharp with efficient, explosive play, while Tucson and Orlando showed they can change a game once they find rhythm.
For Iowa and New Mexico the small details in the red zone, on special teams, and in late situations are still getting in the way of complete performances.
Four weeks in, the early trends are starting to take shape, offering a glimpse at how tight the race may become as the season rolls on.
