2010 Championship
The 2010 United Bowl served as the second championship game in Indoor Football League history and showcased another thrilling title clash. Played on July 17, 2010, at the SportsPlex, the defending champion Billings Outlawsdefeated the Sioux Falls Storm, 43–34, to capture their second consecutive IFL championship.
The contest was held before a crowd of 2,500 fans inside the Outlaws’ indoor practice facility after a June tornado rendered their primary venue unusable. Despite the unusual setting, the game delivered championship-level drama, featuring multiple lead changes, explosive special teams plays, and timely defensive stops.
Established in 2008 following the merger of United Indoor Football (UIF) and the Intense Football League, the IFL was in its second season in 2010. The league again featured two conferences—Intense and United—with Billings advancing as the Intense Conference’s top seed after a dominant 12–2 regular season. Sioux Falls entered as the United Conference’s No. 2 seed at 11–3, earning its United Bowl berth by defeating the Omaha Beef in the quarterfinals and winning the conference championship.
Game Recap
Sioux Falls struck first in the opening quarter when quarterback Terrance Bryant connected with James Terry on a 16-yard touchdown pass, giving the Storm a 7–0 lead. Billings answered almost instantly, as Tim Brown returned the ensuing kickoff 45 yards for a touchdown, tying the game just 32 seconds later and igniting the home crowd.
The second quarter unfolded at a blistering pace, with both teams trading scores in rapid succession. Sioux Falls regained the lead on Terry’s 1-yard touchdown run, but Billings responded with touchdowns from Brown and quarterback Chris Dixon, including an 11-yard scoring run that put the Outlaws ahead 21–13. The Storm stayed within striking distance with a touchdown run from James Jones, but Dixon capped the half with a 31-yard touchdown pass to James Walton. Bryant closed the half with a 1-yard rushing touchdown, sending the teams into halftime with Billings narrowly leading, 28–27.
Momentum continued to swing in the third quarter. Billings opened the half with a 24-yard field goal from Garret Palmer, but Sioux Falls answered with another Terry touchdown run to reclaim the lead, 34–31. As time expired in the quarter, Dixon delivered a critical strike—finding Brown on a 7-yard touchdown pass—to put the Outlaws back in front, 37–34.
The fourth quarter belonged to Billings’ defense. The Outlaws shut out the Storm over the final 15 minutes, forcing stalled drives and winning the field-position battle. Dixon sealed the championship with a 1-yard touchdown run midway through the quarter, extending the lead to 43–34. Defensive contributions from Mike Bazemore, Tyrrell Herndon, Jervonte Jackson, and Michael Eby helped prevent any late Sioux Falls comeback.
Dixon was named United Bowl MVP, finishing with two rushing touchdowns and a passing score while guiding Billings through constant momentum swings. With the victory, the Outlaws cemented their place in early IFL history as the league’s first repeat champions, setting a benchmark for excellence in the United Bowl’s formative years.
