Sioux Falls, SD – The Sioux Falls Storm opened up the 2017 season with a home game against the new IFL Arizona Rattlers. The Sioux Falls Storm home-game win streak extends to 63 wins after defeating the Arizona Rattlers 40-29.
The Storm started the game slow, scoring a late touchdown with 4:36 left in the first quarter. Korey Williams ran in the sweep for a touchdown at the three-yard line. The rest of the first quarter would go unchanged and ended with the Storm leading 7-0.
In the early minutes of the second quarter the Rattlers' Darrell Monroe ran in a touchdown at the 14:45 mark. The Storm attempted to block the kick, but ended up being fooled by a trick play while the Rattlers' Jon Wolf rushed in the end zone. With the two extra points on the board, the Rattlers squeaked ahead of the Storm, making the score 8-7. Three minutes later and the Storm's defense fell as the Rattlers' Darron Thomas completed a 27-yard pass to Dema Washington in their end zone. With 11:31 left in the second, the score was 14-7 in the Rattlers favor. Storm quarterback Lorenzo Brown ran in a 36-yard touchdown, tying the score at 14-14 with 7:54 left on the clock. The tie didn't last long when the Rattlers' Anthony Amos scored their third touchdown of the second quarter making the score 22-14 with 4:06 left. The Storm's running back Robbie Rouse ran in a two-yard touchdown but the team missed the extra point making the score 22-21 in favor of the Rattlers at halftime.
The Storm's victory looked far away when the Rattlers' Amos ran in an 18-yard pass from Thomas making the score 29-21. All hope was not lost when the Storm's newest addition, Rashard Smith made an interception and a 50-yard return. The score at the end of the third was 29-28 and the momentum only picked up from there for the Storm.
It was a hard fought battle, but the Storm's Mike Tatum ran in a touchdown with 4:01 left in the game, breaking the one point lead to make the score 34-29. The final touchdown would occur with 25 seconds left on the clock and Brown connected a pass to Williams at the nine yard line making the final score 40-29 in the Storm's favor.
The Storm improves to 1-0 on the season while the Rattlers fall to 0-1. The Storm returns to action Saturday, February 25th when the Storm travels to Cedar Rapids to face off against the Titans. Kickoff is set for 7:05pm.
