Chicago, IL- The Cedar Rapids Titans (2-7) lost to the Chicago Slaughter (4-6), 38-41, in dramatic fashion Saturday night as Titans Kicker Scott Enos missed a game-tying 33-yard field goal with no time remaining at the Sears Centre Arena. The Titans have now dropped their sixth game in a row. The Chicago Slaughter have now won three games in a row.
This was the second matchup of the Slaughter and Titans this season. In the first game the Cedar Rapids Titans defeated the Slaughter 52-40 on March 23rd. The game was the Titans last taste of victory. Since that game the Titans roster has seen turnover at almost all the major skill positions due to either injury of ineffective play. Regardless, Saturday night’s game was a thrilling back-and forth affair.
The Titans opened up the game in an explosive manner as DB T.J Simmons returned the opening kickoff of the game 55 yards for a touchdown to give the Titan an early 6-0 lead. However the Slaughter were able to battle back and go on a grueling 12-play drive that ate up almost seven minutes of the first quarter. QB Perry Patterson capped off the drive with a one-yard touchdown run to give the Slaughter the lead 7-6 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter started with sloppy play on by both teams. Both the Titans and the Slaughter turned the ball over on a fumbles. The Titans struck first in the second quarter however as K Scott Enos made a field goal to give the Titans a small two point lead. On the next Chicago drive however, QB Patterson hit WR Eyad Salem on a 30 yard pass to give the Slaughter a 14-9 lead. On the ensuring Titans drive RB Andre Crenshaw, off an impressive five TD performance last week, plowed in for a one-yard TD. The Titans were able to add another Scott Enos Field Goal but went into halftime down by two points 21-19.
The Third quarter was filled with field goals by both teams as both the Titans and the Slaughter were able to make two Field goals each. The third quarter ended with the Slaughter leading 27-25.
At the top of the fourth quarter Titans QB Black hit WR Eric McCain on a four yard TD to give the Titans the their first lead since the first quarter. The Slaughter then went on an 11-play drive to retake the lead with a one-yard run by QB Juice Williams. The Titans were able to battle back and with 57 seconds remaining QB Kenneth Black ran for his first TD of the night to give the Titans the lead again. However the Titans left too much time on the clock as Chicago QB Patterson drove his team down the field and hit Eyad Salem on a three-yard TD to give the Slaughter a the lead 41-38 with 22 seconds remaining. The Slaughter were able to hang on a Titans Kicker Scott Enos missed the game-tying 33-yard Field goal with no time remaining.
The Cedar Rapids Titans return home to Mediacom Field at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena next Saturday May 12th to take on the Reading Express. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05 CT. Tickets are still available.
